Common Bull Terrier Problems

Bull Terrier problems are not that many, but still owners should watch out for warning signs and closely monitor the health of their dog. When it comes to Bull Terrier problems, there are absolutely no problems when it comes to temperament. They can’t be described as docile. They are extremely energetic and fun loving, but in a non-aggressive way. These dogs are a bundle of energy and need a lot of exercise. They are very playful and fun-loving and it is perhaps this trait that has led them to make so many appearances in mass media. Perhaps the best known Bull terrier is Spud Mackenize – from old Budweiser commercials of the late 80’s.

Like all dog breeds, bull terriers too have some health problems that are unique to their breed. These Bull Terrier problems can be taken care of if they are closely monitored and regular visits to the vet can ensure that your dog stays in good health. So, what are the problems that are unique to Bull Terriers? Deafness for one. Deafness affects Bull Terriers a lot, especially pure white ones. The white ones have a higher tendency to go deaf. 1 out of 5 white dogs is likely to be affected by deafness whereas about 2% of colored dogs are vulnerable to this problem. It is difficult to notice, but can be noticed in young puppies if they are observed closely.

Most Bull Terrier problems are related to skin rashes and itches. This breed is especially susceptible to skin rashes and allergies, especially insect bites. These dogs can develop problems like itching, rash and hives when bit by insects like mosquitoes, mites and fleas. For your dog’s sake, it would be good if you would hire an exterminator once and get your house cleaned of vermin. This would save your dog a lot of pain and trouble. But if you live in a suburban house with a garden, contact with insects is inevitable and this could be a cause of concern for you.

There might be some Bull Terrier problems that are unique to the individual dog. And some of them might show up in old age. This breed has an average lifespan of about 10-12 years, which is what dogs usually have. Some dogs have been known to live to be as old as 17 years, but 12 years is what you should expect.

Regarding Bull Terrier problems, there are no problems with its hair and coat. The coat is really light and it can be kept looking perfect with very little maintenance. The hairs are very light and extremely fine and these dogs don’t shed much hair and hence shedding won’t be problematic like it is with other dogs breeds. But then again, the coat can be a little to light in some areas. So light in fact that it doesn’t cover the skin adequately and this can lead to exposure to the sun and cause sunburns and rashes. Bull terriers are also known to show behavior that is obsessive compulsive.
